Hi! We're Sean and Mollie Busby, and we live year-round here in Wiseman at Arctic Hive. In addition to our own annual northern lights + adventure retreats and yoga teacher trainings, we make our spaces available to other groups/facilitators wanting to create their own customized experience.

Whether you're a retreat host wanting to give your guests an incredibly unique experience in a faraway land, looking to pioneer first ski descents on an unnamed peak, or a family taking a trip above the Arctic Circle (and looking to stay off the beaten path!) look no further.

To preserve the integrity of this sacred land, we rent out the property for just one group or one event at a time. We work with you side by side to assure your time here at Arctic Hive is magical.

A few things you should know about us...

The property is hike-in access only. All guests will need to be comfortable hiking 2-4 miles per day to assure they're comfortable getting to and from the property. We're about 1 mile from the Village, and we are happy to haul luggage via snowmachine or dogsled as weather permits. This hike-in is a gorgeous part of the whole experience! Not to mention it feels amazing after a long car ride. We provide snowshoes if you need them, and one of us will hike with your group to show you the way.

In the off-season (May-September) when there isn't snow on the ground, we try to get luggage as close as possible to Arctic Hive, but we don't use 4-wheelers to get up the final hill to our property to preserve the tundra. Guests may need to carry their own gear… again, this is part of the whole Arctic Hive experience!

Arctic Hive can host 11 guest max, including guides.  If you're bringing solo travelers that don't already know each other, we recommend 6 guests in the Kalhabuk Cabins (2 per cabin) and up to 2 guides in the Bunkhouse. Here is the breakdown of the available lodging:

The Kalhabuk Cabins:
  • 3 identical 12x12 cabins (144 square feet + a loft)
  • Max Capacity: 3 people per cabin
  • Beds Available: A twin downstairs and a double bed in the loft
Notes:
  • Each of these cabins also has a hideaway bed with a memory foam mattress. Although it is super comfortable, this bed isn't recommended for full-paying guests, as it definitely crowds the small space and would need to be opened each night and closed each morning for cabin mates to get around. We typically just say 2 per cabin, OR offer a small 10% discounts for groups of three willing to share a cabin together.
  • The loft stairs to the double bed are steep and may not be suitable for all guests.
  • Each cabin has a Berkey water filter system so guests have drinking water on demand (provided by Arctic Hive). Our filtered water is pure, refreshing and completely safe for drinking straight from the Berkey tap!
  • Each cabin also has a jetboil stove for boiling water for hot drinks. We provide each cabin with mugs and fixings for pour-over organic coffee, and a variety of caffeinated and herbal teas. We don't allow any other cooking in the cabins.

The Bunkhouse:
  • 8x10 cabin (80 square feet)
  • Max Capacity: 2 people
  • Features twin beds
  • Plenty of hooks and storage underneath the bed, but it is a small space!
  • Cabin has a Berkey water filter system so guests have drinking water on demand (provided by Arctic Hive).
  • This cabin also has its own jetboil. Same as above.

The Other Buildings

The Igloo:
  • This 20-foot dome features a cozy wood stove, and huge 18-foot wall to ceiling, unobstructed window to view the incredible scenery and Northern Lights!
  • This is where all meals are prepared and served to guests.
  • You can use this dome anytime throughout your retreat for lounging, activities, etc. There's not a ton of space for activities requiring moving around, and Mollie may be moving around in the kitchen depending on the time of day, but there is seating for everyone and tables as needed. We also have a bunch of card decks and board games and books your group is welcome to use.
  • Electricity is powered by solar, with a backup generator and all cooking needs are met by propane.
  • We do have a cell phone booster that helps Verizon/GCI phones link into a 3G cell tower down the valley, which is fine for connecting to email or social media for a quick fix. But, this isn't turned on all the time. If you or guests need to make a call with your phone, that's fine, but please note there's no private space to do so, as the cell service won't extend outside the Igloo. This 3G connection is not ideal for making hotspots and doing things on a computer. Currently, AT&T and T-Mobile does not work at all here.
  • We do have a fridge that is always on should guests have small items that need to be refrigerated reliably. There's not always tons of room because this is where we keep our perishable foods cold for meals! Typical items would include medical needs (ie: Insulin) or if they bring a favorite milk or coffee creamer. Please contact us if you believe a guest will need something refrigerated.
  • If your group wants to bring any alcohol, that's fine! We only provide hot coffee or tea, and fresh water. Beer and wine will chill nice and quick when placed outside in the winter!

The Hive:
  • 24-foot Geodesic dome, suitable for group gatherings and yoga
  • Although our rates include the Igloo and cabins, it does NOT include use of The Hive. There is a small fuel surcharge for use of The Hive on a half day basis. Although we do not heat this structure when we're not using it, it easily warms to 70-75 degrees when needed, regardless of the temperature outside.
  • Heated with a Swedish Oil Drip stove and a small wood stove — we use one, both or neither depending on the season and heating needs. The heat of the space is something we manage totally for you, so you won't have to worry!
  • We have all the yoga props you might need for at least 10 people. We use Halfmoon meditation cushions and bolsters (big and small ones), BYoga mats, and we also have foam rollers, eye pillows, sandbags, straps, and enough blocks for everyone to have two.
  • For most groups, we will offer one complimentary yoga class with a crystal bowl sound immersion with Mollie Busby in the Hive during your stay — which you can either take advantage of, or not!

The Outhouse:
  • Cleaned and attended to daily
  • Used solely by you and your guests
  • Hand sanitizer always provided
  • Peeing outside near designated "facili-trees" is recommended instead of using the outhouse for #1.
  • If you/your guests have never peed outside before, we'll show you how.
  • If you/your guests aren't willing to ever pee outside, Arctic Hive might not be a good fit. Beyond our property, when we're out on hikes or in the village, there are no public restrooms as this is a remote location. This aspect of the trip is the closest you may feel to camping... the rest of Arctic Hive will feel just like home!

The Dog Yard:
  • We have 9 happy sled dogs on the property that first and foremost, are our pets. We regularly take them out on daily dogsled runs in the wintertime, and it is our favorite family activity. The dogs absolutely LOVE it, and we do too. Sometimes they come on our hikes with guests, too.
  • Although we don't offer dogsled tours with our dogs, we encourage groups to book tours with Wiseman Kennel in the Village. Steve and his team can take up to two people on each tour around the area, and he can run 2-3 tours a day in the winter. For a group of 8, we typically book two tours on two different days.
  • If guests bring their own cross-country skis, our dogs would LOVE to go ski-jouring — which means you wear a belt with a line attached to it, and get pulled by a happy dog!
  • Guests are welcome to go into the dog yard and pet the dogs whenever they like. The dogs do not run free while guests are on the property. Rather, they each have their own dog house with a thick bed of straw, and they'd love to show you around the place and give lots of kisses! Although it might seem strange if you're not used to Alaskan culture, sled dogs sleep outside year-round, and this is where they're happiest. When they're in the yard, they're there to rest up for the next big ride with the sleds! They grow thick winter coats to keep warm, and if they were to be inside all the time, they'd be miserably hot.
  • If guests do not like dogs, they never need to go near them! Just know that although we clean all buildings regularly and extremely thoroughly, dogs are on the property. If someone has a severe allergy, Arctic Hive might not be a good fit.

Please contact us for the current rates! They are entirely dependent on your season, group size and programming requirements.

Peak Season: October through April — 4 night minimum.

Off Season: May through September — 3 night minimum.

Other notes:
  • Each bed has a comfortable mattress, pillow and linens.
  • Due to our sled dogs being in the vicinity and an abundance of caution for wildlife in the area, we do not allow pets on the property.
  • Although we can help with transportation of gear and shuttling guests from the Village of Wiseman to Arctic Hive (about .5 - 1 mile depending on the season), our custom rates do not include any transportation to or from Fairbanks (the nearest international airport, ~270 miles away).

Included in your stay:
  • An on-site host to help facilitate your stay and assure all the off-grid systems are running smoothly, including daily attention to the outhouse facilities.
  • A chef to cook all your meals and make sure all the necessary food, water, dishes, and serving supplies are there and ready for you. This is our home, and we have all the kitchen amenities you may need. We also wash the dishes — so you can sit back and actually enjoy hosting a retreat for once.
  • We haul out all your waste and trash for you, so you don't have to worry!
  • We offer a rustic, off-grid shower system in the summer, but we don't currently this service in the winter. Guests are provided with baby wipes, Aveda dry shampoo and face wipes in each cabin, along with a small wash basin and Dr. Bronner's soap if they want to wash up with soap and water.
  • Any help you need booking local tours such as northern lights, arctic crafts, dog mushing, hiking, yoga, sightseeing, rafting, scenic drives and more.
  • Although we don't include any transport from Fairbanks, we are totally willing to help you plan the logistics of your trip so that they run smooth! Especially if you've never been up this way before, you need a local to help guide the process — we are happy to help.
  • Exclusive access to our 15-acre center, surrounding by thousands of acres of wilderness in every direction!
  • We provide recreational equipment such as snowshoes and yoga mats, and all the yoga props you could ever need.

    Ready to book?

Although we do book out well in advance, especially for dates March through April, we would love to start a conversation to see if we might be able to carve out time for your group to come to Arctic Hive. Tell us a little bit about what you're looking for...
